Project “Modernization of the County Road 172D” – SMIS code 117955

The project is financed from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Regional Operational Program 2014-2020 (ROP), PRIORITY AXIS 6

The general objective of the project is to increase the accessibility to the TEN-T network of some rural areas of Bistrița-Năsăud county, located in the proximity of the European road E 58, through which indirect connectivity to TEN-T corridors is ensured.

The modernized road is located in the center of Bistrița-Năsăud county crossing a relatively densely populated rural area in the county context, with a predominantly mountainous profile and ensuring the most economical connection of the main tourist areas in the county. TEN-T network and with the county seat municipality.

Bistriţa-Nasăud County is located in northern Romania, in the northeastern part of Transylvania, constituting one of the administrative-territorial units of the North-West Development Region (Northern Transylvania). The surface of the county is of 5,355 km2, representing 2.24% of the surface of the country and 15.68% of the surface of the North-West Development Region.

The proposed project aims at modernizing and rehabilitating a county road DJ 172D that ensures indirect connectivity with the TEN-T network through DN 17 of the rural areas it crosses. The total length of the road sector rehabilitated by the project is 49,917 km.

The population served by the county road that is the object of the project totals 23,506 inhabitants.

The area crossed by DJ 172D has an exceptional natural and anthropic potential, still insufficiently exploited. The county road DJ 172D is the only road access to the tourist area Colibița and the Natura 2000 site Cusma. Ensuring easy access to the area is essential for the development of tourism. Besides the domestic tourism registered at the level of Colibita county, it is more and more requested at national and even international level. At Colibita, tourists can fish, swim, go boating, pedal boating or canoeing, go up the mountain, on the arranged routes, can go for bike rides or simply enjoy nature and the fresh air, the most ozonated from Europe according to the results of a recent study. In the opposite direction, the road ensures access to Sângeorz-Băi resort and Rodna Mountains National Park located in the northern part of the county, shortening by tens of kilometers the access to the areas of tourist interest.

The rehabilitation of the road has led to an increase in speed and road safety and creating conditions for capitalizing on economic potential, increasing investment, developing tourism and improving the living standards of the population.
